What is EFT?
Emotion-Focused Therapy, or EFT, is a therapeutic approach that centers on the importance of emotions in the human experience. It emphasizes understanding and transforming emotional responses to promote psychological well-being.
Developed by Professor Leslie Greenberg, EFT is grounded in the belief that emotions are key to identity and are crucial for making meaningful life choices.
How does EFT work?
EFT is built on the idea that emotional awareness and processing are essential for change. The therapy involves:
- Identifying core emotions: Your therapist will help you identify your core emotions related to the issue at hand.
- Exploring emotional experiences: You will then be guided to explore core emotions, understanding their origins and how they impact your current thoughts and behaviors.
- Processing emotions: Through the therapeutic process, you will learn to process core emotions, moving from unhealthy patterns of avoidance or suppression to healthier emotional responses.
- Transformation: As you become more attuned to your emotions, you can transform negative emotional patterns into positive ones, improving mental health and well-being.
Anxiety and depression
Anxiety and depression often involve complex emotional experiences. EFT helps you delve into these emotions, uncovering the underlying feelings that drive anxious or depressive patterns. By processing these emotions in a safe and supportive environment, you can experience relief and begin to shift toward healthier emotional responses.
Adult ADHD
Adult ADHD is often associated with feelings of frustration, overwhelm, and impulsivity. EFT helps individuals with ADHD better understand and manage these emotional responses. By working through emotions such as anger, shame, or anxiety, you develop more effective coping strategies and improve your focus and emotional regulation.
Self-esteem
Low self-esteem frequently stems from unresolved emotional experiences, such as criticism, rejection, or failure. EFT helps you access these deep-seated emotions, understand their impact, and transform them into more positive self-perceptions. Over time, this process can lead to a stronger sense of self-worth and confidence.
Integrating EFT into your healing journey
EFT is a versatile therapeutic approach that can be tailored to meet each individual’s unique needs. Whether you’re working with a therapist or exploring your emotional landscape independently, EFT provides valuable tools for enhancing emotional intelligence and fostering personal growth.
